The purpose of the Visionary Awards is to recognize and celebrate extraordinary regional leadership and the Herbert G. Klein Visionary Awards is one of seven distinct categories. Click here to see the 2012 Visionary Award honorees.
LEAD will also recognize at the Visionary Awards the everyday heroes and their significant impact on our region through our Community Spotlight Award category. LEAD is celebrating 11 finalists who have been recognized by the 10 News Leadership Awards, a partnership with LEAD San Diego, 10 News KGTV and SDG&E, at a VIP reception prior to the event program. One special honoree will be honored on the main stage during the event program for their impressive dedication to our community.
About the Honorees
VICTOR BAKER is the Supplier Diversity Program Manager for SDG&E’s Diverse Business Enterprise Division. In this position, his primary responsibility is to identify and develop, and source minority-, women- and service–disabled veteran-owned enterprises to provide products and services to the Sempra family of companies. Because of Mr. Baker’s tenacity and leadership, SDG&E has the leading supplier diversity program in the state and has received kudos from the California Public Utilities Commission. He is thought of by colleagues to posses the drive and determination to build bridges between people of different backgrounds to achieve common goals. Mr. Baker is committed to closing the gap corresponding to the discrepancy in education, finance and development that can be seen in communities north of Interstate 8 vs. south of Interstate 8. His vision is to develop an organization to accomplish these goals or, with the maximum involvement, secure support and funding to fulfill a dream of creating a charter school built around personal leadership.
JAMES BEAUBEAUX has served as the COO and CFO of the San Diego County Medical Society since 2005. He came to San Diego as a young military dependent and his career path – from child-entrepreneur to professional entertainer to small business owner to COO/CFO – is infused with his life-long passion for community service and civic contribution. He has served on the Board of Directors of Lamb’s Players Theatre, Mental Health America and Community Health Improvement Partners where in 2010 he was awarded the “Outstanding Community Partner Recognition” for exceptional contribution and commitment. He volunteers with 211 San Diego, San Diegans for Healthcare Coverage, and is the healthcare domain co-chair of the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative. Mr. Beaubeaux also serves on the Emergency Medicine Oversight Commission, Group Eradicating Resilient Microorganisms (GERM) Commission, San Diego County’s Health Services Advisory Board and Healthy San Diego Board.
PAULINE MARTINSON has been the Executive Director of I Love a Clean San Diego (ILACSD) since 2006. Under Ms. Martinson’s leadership, ILACSD has expanded the organizations reach and impact in the region. Her leadership style building bridges between community members, corporations, county and city governments and partner organizations. Each year 30,000 San Diegans from every walk of life, come together to participate in the organization’s inland and beach clean-ups and beautification projects. Another 30,000 youth have been impacted by ILACSD’s engaging in-class and outdoor education presentations. Ms. Martinson’s leadership also led to the development of WasteFreeSD.org, an innovative resource for San Diegans interested in recycling and proper waste disposal. She serves on a variety of environmental and community committees, including the Otay Valley Regional Park Citizens Advisory Committee, Technical Advisory Committee for Solid Waste, and San Diego’s Regional Sustainability Partnership.
DR. DANELL SCARBOROUGH is Executive Director of the San Diego Human Relations Commission, a 15-member commission devoted to issues of equal opportunity and access, mutual respect and inclusion. She also serves as the Executive Director for the City’s Citizens’ Review Board on Police Practices. For the past 20 years, Dr.Scarborough has led public sector organizations to develop initiatives in the areas of leadership, management and board development, change management, diversity, strategic planning, and community involvement processes. She has been director of administration for a twice-elected city attorney, managed internal organization development and training unit, served as project leader for The Diversity Commitment, San Diego’s nationally recognized and highly successful culture change effort, and was associate director during the creation of THE CENTRE for Organization Effectiveness. Dr.Scarborough supports the Human Relations Commission advocating for and advising the Mayor and City Council on social justice issues, conducting and promoting activities that foster mutual understanding and protect basic human and civil rights.
DOUG WHITE is the Manager of Government Affairs at Cricket Communications, Inc. Whether the commitment has been local, state or federal, he has been involved in his community for the entirety of his career. Starting out in the California Governor’s Office, Mr. White quickly cut his political teeth in Washington, D.C. He has worked for the Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, the Obama presidential campaign and Presidential Inaugural Commission, and multiple California State Assembly and City of San Diego Council campaigns. Mr. White’s primary responsibilities at Cricket include overseeing the corporation’s 50-state legislative and regulatory compliance programs. Mr. White’s support for energy sustainability, environmentalism, and civil rights has consistently guided his career and as a result, he has chosen to actively pursue positive change in those arenas. As an ally and board member of The San Diego LGBT Center and board member of the Jewish Federation’s Young Adult Division, Mr. White puts into practice a personal ethos of “uniting, not dividing” – simply put, it is a way of viewing the world where we each seek to find common ground and leave it a little better than how we found it.
