2008 Visionary Award Winners Announced

January 21, 2008 (San Diego) - True visionaries find solutions and go above and beyond to help others lead more productive and meaningful lives. For the past five, LEAD San Diego has honored individuals who have demonstrated visionary leadership at an awards presentation that captures the breath and depth of civic responsibility. LEAD San Diego proudly announces the winners of the 2008 Visionary Awards, to be presented at special ceremony saluting their extraordinary contribution to the region. The heartfelt celebration salutes those have made a significant impact on our community and our lives. “This is truly an inspirational group of individuals who exemplify leadership in San Diego and help inspire it in others,” according to LEAD Chairman Kristy Gregg.

The 2008 Visionary Awards, chaired by LEAD board member Vicky Carlson, President of Office Pavilion, will pay tribute to business and public leaders who have demonstrated visionary leadership in the following categories.

The 2008 Visionary Award Recipients:

The Morgan Award: Tom Fat, In Memoriam. First awarded in 1993, the Morgan Award is named in recognition for retired editor and columnist Neil Morgan and presented in honor of a lifetime achievement in community leadership. By honoring Tom Fat, one of San Diego’s most effective civic leaders, LEAD hopes to inspire others to strive for exemplary leadership and integrity.

Quality of Life: The Nice Guys are being honored for their efforts since 1979 to quietly assist San Diego families and individuals who cannot meet life’s demands. Their primary goal, achieved without staff support, is to get people back on their feet and become self-sufficient.

Community Collaboration: Leon Williams - Former Chairman, Metropolitan Transit System. Williams championed transportation, health care and social issues during a lifetime of public service spanning 50 years, including 30 in public office as the first African-American elected to both the San Diego City Council and County Board of Supervisors.

LEAD Graduate of the Year: Cheryl Kendrick ’84, Community Volunteer, Kendrick epitomizes excellence in community leadership and volunteerism through her work with the San Diego Convention Center, Senior Community Centers, the California State Commission on the Status of Women, The Huntington Disease Society and the National Conference for Community and Justice, among others.

Diversity: Dr. Ellen Beck, M.D. - UCSD Medical Center and Free Clinic. Beck, known as “San Diego’s Mother Teresa,” is being honored for her leadership in addressing health needs of the undeserved through her founding and leadership at the UCSD Student Run Free Clinics providing outpatient services to San Diegans without access to health care, including working poor and street homeless. She not only gives to the community today, but imbues future generations of physicians with the desire and skills to continue her mission.

Inaugural Ronald H. Kendrick Regional Stewardship Award: Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO, Scripps Health was selected for his efforts to balance individual community interests with the needs of our greater region, specifically through his EMT service and work with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Search & Rescue Unit.

The Nathanson Award for Cross-Border Region Building: Dr. Jeffrey Davidow, President, Institute of the Americas, has pioneered efforts toward a joint future between San Diego and Baja California by helping to promote informed discussion and debate about public policies throughout Latin America and the United States.

Economic Opportunity: The Hybritech Team, the founding fathers of the local biotechnology industry will be recognized as a group for creating economic opportunities in our region that might not otherwise exist. Alumni from this late 1970’s company have produced more than 40 bio-tech startups that have significantly strengthened the region’s economy.

Herbert G. Klein Visionary Award: To Be Announced at Event. Awarded to a member of LEAD San Diego’s flagship program, the Core Curriculum Class, this awardee will be honored for significant leadership contributions to the community and demonstrated potential to effect further change upon graduation.
